The librarian's job is exciting and busy, involving many teaching and organizational activities in a day. From teaching students how to access and evaluate information in print and non-print formats, how to use computers for creation and completion of assignments, to helping teachers and staff members with resources for use in their classrooms, it is a busy place. Troubleshoot technology problems, answering questions and finding good books to read also takes up a great part of the day. Updating the collection of books, finding new materials and maintaining the collection are activities the librarian is also responsible for
Brief biography:
I was born and raised in California and moved to Kodiak in 1972, when I was 19. I fell in love with Kodiak because of its beauty, opportunities, and the fine people who live here. I worked in a wide variety of jobs, from cannery worker, waitress, and retail clerk to hospital cook. In 1976, when I worked at the A. Holmes Johnson Memorial Library, Kodiak's public library, I realized that I had found my career pathway.
Attending Portland State University to receive an education degree and a school library-media endorsement was the beginning of a never-ending journey of education. I enjoy learning something new every day, I love working with young people, I truly enjoy that there is a never-ending quest for information and knowledge, and I have come to embrace computer technology for the helpful tool that it provides in organizing and processing information. I taught at Peterson School for ten years, and have been at KHS for seven years. During 2004 I took a year's leave to complete a master's degree in library and information science at San Jose State University in California. The experience was exciting and renewing.
Some of my hobbies include, but are not limited to: gardening, golf, hiking and exploring with my three dogs, reading, baking, organizing and staying involved with issues important to me and my community. I was very involved with the Alaska Geographic Alliance for twelve years and I love to travel and meet new people. I have traveled to Italy, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, England, and France as well as much of Alaska.
I currently serve on the Kodiak High School Technology Committee, Staff Development Committee and as a sponsor of the class of 2010.
