Kodiak Schools Online
An Interlibrary Cooperation Grant
funded by the Alaska State Library

Kodiak School Libraries Online, a grant-funded project, helped all town schools' libraries to undergo a retrospective conversion and training for library aides in the Fall of 2006. This conversion placed all of the electronic records from the previously used software, CASPR, into the newly purchased, Destiny online library catalog. Check out the catalogs!

Trainer, Betty Silva, (center) instructed library staff for two days at Fall Inservice KHS. Pictured from left are: Mary Jane Krajnek, KMS; Vickie Coates, Main; Ellie Werbe, North Star; Betty; Marian Johnson, KHS; Mary Ann Hickey, Peterson; and Laurie Madsen, KHS.
Included in the grant, but not in the conversion was Chiniak School's Library. Chiniak' s collection had to be manually entered because it never had an electronic or card-based catalog. Over 2,700 books were entered into the catalog in three days!
Chiniak's teacher, Elaine Griffin, and volunteer, Sue Ketchum, placed barcodes in books before being entered into the Destiny system.
Chiniak School is located at the mile 40 of the Chiniak Highway, on Kodiak Island. Learn more about this unique school. Read more about Elaine Griffin, now retired from KIBSD.

Old Harbor School received an IMLS Interlibrary Coooperation Grant also, and used the funds to purchase Destiny. Their library wasn't organized or cataloged when the project started. High School Librarian, Laurie Madsen, spent three days in December, 2006. sorting and organizing this collection with teacher, Jennifer Simeonoff, who wrote the grant. We started with an empty set of shelves, at left, and after three days, had a semblance of order as you see below. Now, many of the books you see below are in their catalog! This project continues!

From April 7-10, 2008, a team of librarians descended upon the Old Harbor Library, and with help of Simeonoff and the Old Harbor Librarian, Ramona Erickson, over 1,200 more books were cataloged and added to this collection. Middle School teacher and Librarian, Kaia Converse, Library Aide, Ellie Werbe, and High School Librarian, Laurie Madsen flew down to beautiful Old Harbor for four days of data entry, good food, and grueling work. Grant funding paid for the travel, food, and lodging, District funding paid for substitute teachers, and all four KIBSD employees volunteered over 20 hours of their own time to work on this project. Beautiful weather, friendly people, and a sense of accomplishment were the added benefits of this excursion. Work continues, with about 1,800 more books to enter.

Marie Griffin is helped by elementary students to enter books into the system. Kaia Hendrickson, Sue Baker & Bibiana Christman help out too.

The project began with empty shelves and many piles!
The E books, formerly under the windows, were moved to the front of the room, and over 800 of them cataloged and Lexiled.
Jennifer, Ellie & Kaia worked hard to catalog the E books
Mona Erickson was trained in catlaoging and organizing a community library
Almost all books that were overflowing on carts when the project started have been cataloged and shelved!
Old Harbor students were a big help in moving the Everybody collection!
The Fiction collection is getting organized! Check what is available online: http://destiny.kodiakschools.org
