KIBSD Battle of the Books 2008

The Battle of the Books is a statewide reading incentive program, sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. Each year, twelve to fifteen titles are selected by school librarians for students to read. Some students begin reading during the summer, and when school resumes meetings are scheduled and the books are discussed. Students often meet weekly to discuss their reading, then answer questions in an oral, comprehensive format.

The state program organizes students into grade-level teams, such as third-fourth grades; fifth-sixth grades; seventh-eighth grades; and high school levels. Kindergarten-second graders are involved, but only compete at a local level. For more information, check out their website.

KHS & KMS teams travel to Port Lions

In December, 2008, teams from Kodiak High School & Kodiak Middle School traveled on the ferry Tustemena to meet new friends at Port Lions School and participated in mock battles. An exciting part of the trip was an audioconference with George Guthridge, author of Kids from Nowhere, a title on the high school list. Two battles took place, one for high school and one for middle school students, Port Lions' high school students won, and one of the KMS teams won their 3-way battle. The town students enjoyed a chance to visit a remote school and learn about the life there.
