Elks Student of the Month-February 2008

Bernadette Fangonilo and Quinn Langfitt were selected as the Elks Students of the Month at
Kodiak
High School
for February 2008.
Bernadette, a senior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the daughter of Amalia and Engelberto Fangonilo. This industrious young lady has applied herself in school. Although English is not Bernadette’s first language, she had done well in college prepatory classwork. Bernadette has also been willing to share her knowledge with others since she often tutors students with their homework or other school needs. In addition, Bernadette works outside of school at the Asian Grocery Store. She assists people who are planning special activities by helping them with decorations and ordering what is needed for the occasion. Bernadette enjoys working with computers; especially when she is exploring and learning new things. In her future, she would like to attend the
University
of
Alaska- Anchorage
to earn a degree in Accounting. Bernadette would especially like to help her family financially.
Quinn, a junior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the son of Rick and Diane Langfitt. Always in action, Quinn is an excellent student involved in a myriad of activities including the KHS Swim Team, National Honor Society, Jazz Band, Pep Band, and Key Club where he currently is treasurer. Outside of school, Quinn swims with Kingfishers, and he serves as a
Teen Court
judge.
Kodiak Teen Court
is a program that allows young people involved in the law to go through a court process with peers rather than the adult court system. Quinn works for the
Kodiak
Parks
and Recreation during the summer, and with the Kodiak Athletic Club year round. When he has the time, Quinn enjoys playing drums, singing in his rock band, playing XBox 360 Guitar Hero, and participating in Ultimate Frisbee. His future plans are to attend school somewhere on the West Coast to major in mathematics or engineering. He hopes to eventually attend law school.

Emily, a sophomore at

High School
, is the daughter of Mari and Barkley Lloyd. Emily arrived from
California
this fall after attending
North Bay
Christian
Academy
. This young scholar has transitioned into
Kodiak
High School
well taking honor classes and becoming active in our Pep Band. Last year, she also was involved in both drama and dance. Outside of school, Emily is a member of the Oasis Youth Group and attends the Kodiak Bible Chapel working on her spiritual growth. She enjoys drumming, reading, cooking, traveling, dog-sitting, and playing her XBox 360 Guitar Hero game. In the future, Emily would like to improve her drumming skills, travel to
Europe
and eventually attend college. At this point, she has not settled on any particular field of study or school.
James, a senior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the son of Scott and Deborah Wood. James began his high school career as a correspondence student, but then he chose to become a full-time KHS student much to our advantage. This young man has earned membership with the National Honor Society because of his excellent grades. In addition, he is active in Student Council, the KHS Swim Team and Yearbook. Currently, James also serves as the student representative on the Kodiak Island Borough School Board. James enjoys drinking coffee, reading, snow-shoeing, and photography. His plans for the future include attending a selective college such as Stanford,
Georgetown
, or Davidson to major in English. Ultimately, James would like to specialize in business or criminal law and eventually go into politics.

Tianna Allen and Charles Juenger were selected as the
March 2008 Elks Students of the Month
Tianna, a senior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the daughter of David and Jolene Allen. Don’t let this somewhat reserved and unassuming young woman fool you. Tianna is an excellent student and athlete. She challenges herself with Advanced Placement coursework and maintains an exceptional GPA. Her academic achievements have earned Tianna a membership with the National Honor Society. In addition, Tianna is a fireball on the softball field having competed since she was in second grade. Currently, Tianna is a top pitcher for the KHS softball team. For the past two summers, she has played with the American Softball Association. Tianna enjoys hiking, fishing, reading, hunting and playing softball. This fall, she plans to attend the
College
of
St. Catherine
(St. Kate’s) in
Minnesota
to major in chemical engineering.
Charles, a junior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the son of Gary and Cassandra Juenger. This polite young man is a pleasure to have at

High School
. He moved to Kodiak at the beginning of his freshman year and immediately got involved in sports and enrolled in our honors and Advanced Placement courses where he has performed well. In school, Charles is active with the Kodiak High School Knowledge Masters team. Outside of school, he is involved with his church,

. In his spare time, Charles enjoys reading, playing video games, running with his dog and writing. His future plans are to attend the
University
of
Alaska
Fairbanks
to major in engineering. Charles’ ultimate goal is to complete an aerospace engineering program and land a job with Boeing.

Nina Krumrey and Cody Foster were selected as the Elks Students of the Month at
Kodiak
High School
for December 2007.
Nina, a junior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the daughter of Ray and Stella Krumrey who live in
Old
Harbor
. Nina has lived for the last two years with Joe and Anita Bailor in Kodiak to allow her to attend
Kodiak
High School
. In school, Nina has been a member of the Kodiak High School Volleyball team and the Native Youth Group. Outside of school she teaches figure skating at
Baranof
Park
. Nina also was a representative for both the Koniag Shareholders’ meetings and for the Kodiak High School Indian Education Board. She has recently been accepted for the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program. Nina enjoys ice skating, volleyball, working with students, playing her guitar, math, traveling, drama, Alutiiq dancing, riding her motorcycle, and helping out when possible. She would like to attend college in her future to become either an engineer or a math teacher.
Cody, a senior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the son of Kevin and Charlene Foster. Cody is active on both Kodiak High School Varsity Cross-Country and Track and Field teams. His high school physical education classes have been some of his most favorite classes because Cody challenges the other students with his ping-pong skills, but he also enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee with Mr. Neagley. Outside of school, Cody works at Ardinger’s and helps with City League volleyball teams. Cody’s main hobby is driving his car and listening to music. Additional interests include attending school dances and playing sports including Ultimate Frisbee, soccer, volleyball, track, and cross-country. Cody hasn’t made a firm plan for his future but is looking at schools in both
Oregon
and
California
where he plans to move after graduation.

, is the son of Scott and Deborah Wood. This incredible young man has stormed

with his enthusiasm and wit. James began early on in his high school career as a correspondence student, but then he chose to become a full-time KHS student much to our advantage. This young man earned membership with the National Honor Society because of his excellent grades. In addition, he became active in Student Council, the KHS Swim Team and Yearbook. Currently, James serves as the student representative on the Kodiak Island Borough School Board. With his natural poise when interacting with adults and his ability to truly represent the

student body, James has earned respect from board members and students alike. It’s not uncommon to meet James with a traveling coffee mug in hand as he enjoys drinking quality coffee. In addition, he enjoys reading and photography. James’ plans for the future include attending a selective college such as Stanford,

, or Davidson to major in English. Ultimately, he would like to become a lawyer.

December 2007

Kodiak High School is pleased to announce Brianna Gibbs as the Borough Student of the Month for December. Brianna, a senior at Kodiak High School, is the daughter of Ron and Pat Gibbs. This friendly and energetic young lady is talented both academically and athletically. As part of Kodiak High School, Brianna is secretary on our Student Council and President of the Senior class. She is also a member of Key Club and her excellent grades have earned her membership with the National Honor Society. Athletically, Brianna has been a successful Cross-Country runner competing on Varsity at State for the last two years. Outside of school, Brianna works part-time at Mill Bay Coffee. In her spare time, Brianna enjoys painting, running, and traveling. In her future, Brianna plans to travel around the world. She would like to eventually work in the field of International Public

Elks Students of the Month at Kodiak High School for October 2007

Halley, a senior at Kodiak High School, is the daughter of Jim and Joy Arneson. Halley is actively involved in the KHS Student Council, National Honor Society, and she serves as Senior Class Secretary. Outside of school, she volunteers for KACLAC, an afterschool program for elementary students. Last summer she worked at the Kodiak Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. She enjoys camping, hiking, being with her friends, spinning (on a stationary bike), and baking cupcakes. After high school, Halley plans to attend a liberal arts college in Oregon to study marketing and advertising.
Jeric (John Eric), another senior at Kodiak High School, is the son of Edwin and Mely Quiliza. Not only is he an exceptional student, but Jeric completes volunteer service as a member of the National Honor Society. In addition, he competes on the KHS Knowledge Masters team and with the spring Track and Field program. During his summers, Jeric has worked in the cannery and at Safeway. His hobbies include playing ultimate Frisbee or computer games, and spending time with his family. In his future, Jeric would like to attend college and become a teacher. He hasnt decided on a school but is considering the University of Utah or Washington State

Julie Beehler and Steven Leitheiser were selected as the Elks Students of the Month at
Kodiak
High School
for November 2007.
Julie, a junior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the daughter of Bruce and Lila Beehler. With her top grades, Julie is a member of National Honor Society. In addition, she was previously a member of the Community Student Involvement Club (CSI) and started the first Kodiak Relay for Life. Julie’s other school activities include the Youth Alive Club and Choir Council where she served as Treasurer. Outside of school, Julie sings with the Worship Team for Oasis. Last year she had the opportunity to sing in a local choir, Cante Dolce, which competed in the State Solo and Ensemble Competition. Julie also participates in a Sunday Youth Group and works part-time at Harborside Coffee Shop. She enjoys cooking, scrapbooking, hanging out with her friends, reading, singing, working on crafts, and taking long walks on the beach. Julie’s future plans include attending a college in a warm climate to study social work.
Steven, a senior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the son of Todd and Dawn Leitheiser. This talented young man is currently a member of National Honor Society. Previous years, Steven served on Student Council as Class President (11th grade) and Class Treasurer (10th grade). The last two years, he also was an athlete on the Kodiak High School Football team. Probably one of Steven’s greatest passions, however, is drama. He has been a member of the KHS Drama Club each year and participated in community productions including the Little Shop of Horrors. Steven will be a knight as part of Camelot this spring. His interests include making films, acting, and planning to go to
California
. Steven plans to attend the
University
of
Southern California
next year as a film major.

Brianna, a senior at Kodiak High School, is the daughter of Ron and Patt Gibbs. This energetic young lady is talented both academically and athletically. In school, Brianna is a secretary of Student Council, President of the Senior class, and a member of Key Club and National Honor Society. In addition, she has been a successful Cross-Country runner. Outside of school, Brianna works part-time at Mill Bay Coffee. Her hobbies include painting, running, and traveling. In her future, Brianna plans to travel around the world and eventually work in International Public Relations.
Johnathan, also a senior at Kodiak High School, is the son of John and Genedine Taan. Johnathan is involved in a variety of activities at Kodiak High School. He is on the baseball team and participates in volunteer service. Outside of school, Johnathan works at the Chart Room Restaurant. In addition, he is a Little Dribblers coach and annually participates in the Kodiak Spring clean-up. Johnathan enjoys staying active by running, both reading about and working on cars, and being with his friends. His plans include attending Universal Technical Institute to earn Master Mechanic certification. From there, Johnathan hopes to earn a degree in Business.
