Borough Student of the Month-May, 2008

Kodiak
High School
is pleased to announce Maya Edgerly as the Borough Student of the Month for May. Maya, a senior, is the daughter of Nira Givon and Andrew Edgerly. Academically and artistically talented, Maya is enthusiastically willing to take part in most everything that comes her way. Maya became a member of Key Club her sophomore year, then went on to become actively involved with Student Council the last two years. She served as Public Relations Officer her junior year and currently serves as Senior Class Vice President. Creativity has also been a large part of Maya’s involvement at KHS. She has enrolled in art courses every year including Metalworking for Artists her sophomore year and Advanced Art her junior and senior years. Finally, Maya was instrumental with the preparation and decorations for last year’s Prom. Academically, Maya has taken challenging courses and maintained excellent grades. Her high marks have enabled her to be a member of the National Honor Society the last two years. Maya burns up some of her endless energy enjoying biking, snowboarding, dancing, yoga, and camping. Her plans for next year include attending an Immersion/Adventure program in
Ecuador
where she can utilize her four years of high school Spanish and traveling. Eventually, Maya will attend college, but she has not finalized with a major or which college she will attend.

Elk's Students of the Month-April, 2008

Laura Ranney and Michael Odell were selected as the Elks Students of the Month at
Kodiak
High School
for April 2008
Laura, a senior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the daughter of Judy Phillips and Cecil Ranney. With a positive outlook and non-stop energy, this personable young lady is always on the move. Laura stays busy at school as National Honor Society President, and as a member of both the Knowledge Masters team and Drama Club. She has participated for the last three years in the Poetry Out Loud competition where she placed either 1st or 2nd in the district each time. Outside of school, Laura volunteers at the KMXT radio station and as a costume assistant for the community theater. She spends her summers as a
Bristol Bay
commercial fisherman. When Laura finds time, she enjoys knitting colorful socks, reading novels and cooking. She plans to attend
Harvard
University
in the fall to major in political science. Laura would later like to attend law school.
Michael, also a senior at
Kodiak
High School
, is the son of David and Elizabeth Odell. Michael is an excellent student and a superb athlete. He has consistently challenged himself with honors and Advanced Placement courses. His academic achievements have earned him a place in the National Honor Society. In addition, Michael is completing an independent study history research project with our US History teacher, Matt Neagley. When not working in the classroom, Michael excels on the sports field. He has been a mainstay in KHS teams including basketball, football, wrestling, track and field, and baseball. Not to be forgotten, Michael is also a member of the Kodiak High School Jazz Band. Outside of school, Michael volunteers as a Salvation Army bell-ringer at Christmas, picking up trash during the summer, and cleaning up for Crab Festival. Michael enjoys football, track, orchestra and jazz music,
Tennessee
athletics, professional sports, ultimate Frisbee and history. His hobbies include running, weight training, school, sky diving and yoga. Michael’s future plans are to attend the University of Tennessee-Knoxville to major in History, to play football for the Volunteers, and to ultimately become an archaeologist and/or football coach.

College Navigator is a free consumer information tool designed to help students, parents, high school counselors, and others get information about nearly 7,000 postsecondary institutions in the U.S. It offers a wide range of information -- such as programs offered, retention and graduation rates, prices, aid available, degrees awarded, campus safety, and accreditation. Launched recently by the U.S. Department of Education the College Navigator was developed by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)and plans continuing improvements in the content and function of the site, and there are plans for a Spanish version in the coming months.
