Mrs. Darcy Glagolich

Darcy Glagolich graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1986 with a Bachelors degree in Home Economics and a Bachelors degree in Education. Hired in 1987 at Kodiak High School, she continued her educational studies and completed a master’s degree in Vocational Education from the University of Alaska Anchorage with an emphasis on Culinary Arts.

Besides teaching six different subjects, Darcy also sponsors two student leadership clubs, Family Career and Community Leaders of America and Postponing Sexual Involvement. Darcy thoroughly enjoys living in Kodiak as the ethnic diversity and the natural beauty of the Island have enhanced her appreciation of life. Her hobbies include playing volleyball and softball.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT, EDUCATION AND PARENTING
Grade Level(s): 10-12 Yearlong course

This course is designed to create a greater understanding of the roles and responsibility of parenting and caring for children. The students will learn the importance of providing a safe, healthy, nurturing environment as children progress through the various developmental stages. Students will also observe and participate in planning and executing developmentally appropriate learning activities in a supervised laboratory setting.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Grade Level(s): 11-12 Yearlong course
Prerequisite: Child Development, Education and Parenting; Teacher Recommendation

This course prepares students for gainful employment and/or entry into post-secondary education. Content provides students a foundation in the concepts of child development theory, facilities design and management, and affords them the opportunity to integrate knowledge and skill and practices in a hands long learning environment. Student will spend at least 50 percent and a maximum of 80 percent of the class in a work based learning opportunity.

CULINARY ARTS I
Grade Level(s): 10-12 Yearlong course
Lab Fee $ 25.00

Culinary Arts I is designed to acquaint the student with the food service industry. The areas to be covered will be Careers, Food Service Practices, Management, Laws, Industry standards, safety and sanitation, the professional kitchen, culinary applications, and baking and pastry applications.

CULINARY ARTS II
Grade Level(s): 10-12 Yearlong course
Prerequisite: Culinary Arts I
Lab Fee: $25.00

Culinary Arts II is designed to further expand the basic skills learned in the Culinary Arts I. The students will study the history and development of the restaurant industry and continue to increase food production, presentation and service knowledge and skills, while maintaining industry standards for safety and sanitation as well as food handling techniques.

CULINARY ARTS III
Grade Level(s): 11-12 Yearlong course
Prerequisite: Culinary Arts II
Lab Fee: $25.00

This course introduces students to careers in food service and teaches them the basics skills and knowledge needed for success in the food service industry. This is a Prostart curriculum developed by the National Restaurant Association as part of the school-to-career approach to learning. Upon completion of Prostart requirements, students will receive Serv-Safe and Alaska Hospitality certifications.

CULINARY ARTS IV
Grade Level(s): 11-12 Yearlong course
Prerequisite: Culinary Arts III
Lab Fee: $25.00

This course is the second consecutive year of the Prostart curriculum designed by the National Restaurant Association as part of the school-to-career approach to learning. Upon completion of the class, a nationally sponsored exam, and a certified work requirement, the student s will receive a Prostart Certification.
