Anthony Cavan

Mr. Cavan graduated from Eielson High School. He earned an Associate of Arts degree from the University of Alaska, Anchorage and a Bachelor of Arts in Education, and a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Mr. Cavan established his welding techniques in the U.S. Air Force prior to attending college. His favorite phrase is "Get to work!"

Courses taught by Mr. Cavan:

Welding I
Grades 10-12; Offered as a year-long course
Prerequisites: Students are required to provide their own safety glasses, welding gloves, welding helmet, and coveralls. Course fee is $25.
Students will learn the basic theory and practice of fusing ferrous metals. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is the process emphasized. Students gain experience with a selection of welded joint designs and a variety of electrodes. Standard industrial safety procedures are stressed.
Welding II
Grades11-12 ; Offered as a year-long course
Prerequisites; Welding I; Students are required to provide their own safety glasses, welding gloves, welding helmet, and coveralls. Course fee is $25.
Students will learn the basic theory and practice of fusing ferrous metals. Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and oxyacetylene welding are the processes emphasized. Students gain experience with a selection of welded joint designs. Standard industrial safety procedures are stressed.

Advanced Welding
Grade 12; Offered as a year-long course
Students continue learning the theory and practice of ferrous and non-ferrous metal fusion. Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) is one of the processes emphasized. Students will also use oxygen-acetylene and plasma-arc cutting systems. Projects in both steel and aluminum will develop design, layout, and fabrication skills. Standard industrial safety procedures are stressed. Course fee is $25. Prerequisites: Welding 1, Welding II and instructor approval.

Boat Building
Grades 11-12
This course focuses on the construction of a yearly aluminum small boat/skiff, built according to specifications associated with commercial vessel construction. Specific skill areas the student will gain a working knowledge of include-design, layout, fabrication/ Mig welding, and structural testing. Course fee is $25. Prerequisites: Welding 1 and instructor approval.
