Region III Champions--AGAIN

It was another great weekend for the Bears! It was a beautiful, sunny, Alaskan fall day at Colony High School for the 2007 Region III Cross Country Championship.Trevor Dunbar became the first boy in the history of Kodiak High School to win back to back region XC titles. Abby Reed added another Region XC title to her resume that goes along with her great sophomore victory in 2005 at Kodiak's own Bear Valley Golf Course.

Trevor and Abby might have achieve the same result, but they sure employed different strategies to get there. Trevor led from start to finish as only runner-up Jake Parisien of Palmer tried to stay with him, but by the 2 kilometer mark, Parisien, the 2005 Region champ, could no longer match the quick pace Trevor was dishing out. The rest of the race was TD vs. the clock. The clock stopped at 16:06 when Trevor crossed the 5K Finish Line and in the process took 32 seconds off the course record of 16:38 that Mike Miller of ACS had set 45 minutes earlier in the boys 3A varsity race. The old course record belonged to Parisien at 16:53 from the Colony Invitational earlier this season.

Abby's race was in total contrast to Trevor's, She went out conservative and bided her time back in 15th place while many runners went out far too aggressively. After the first kilometer Abby, running side by side with teammate Chloe Ivanoff, began picking off the fading runners. One by one, Abby & Chloe began moving up while Skyview's Defending Champ Ivy O'Guinn was sporting a comfortable lead and appeared on her way to another victory. By 2K Abby & Chloe had moved up to 6th & 7th. By 3K they had moved into 2nd & 3rd with only the defending champ in from of them and they were cutting into her lead rapidly. By the 4K mark the two Kodiak runners were in front but O'Guinn was close behind and closing in forth was a fresh looking Heidi Doner of Colony. Chloe was spent and began to lose some ground as the competitors came back, but Abby held on bravely and kicked home for the Victory in 20:15. Doner was 2nd, O'Guinn 3rd, while Chloe slipped to 6th in the final stretch.

The Dunbar, Reed Victories marked the first time Kodiak runners won Both the boys & girls races since 1982, When Phil Fogle & Kathy Kozak did it.

The Bears Boys finished as follows:

1st Jr. Trevor Dunbar 16:06

3rd Jr. Sam Salus 16:56

5th So. Dylan Anthony 17:19 PR

10th Sr. Benny Garcia 17:31

22nd Sr. Colton Cubbedge 18:29

23rd Se. Caleb Heinrichs 18:29

31st Jr. Justin Blott 19:02

The course was challenging, hilly, twisty and entirely on soft grass, Times ran slow and rapidly improving Dylan Anthony was our only boy to get a personal record time. 17:44 was his previous best from last week at Ft. Abercrombie so he PR-d by 25 seconds.

Never the less, our first 4 runners all had good times for this course but for next week it will be important for us to cut that 58 second gap down between our number 4 & 5 runners. This week we were fortunate that there were only 11 runners in the gap. A gab that big next week could hold four times that many runners and add costly points to our score.

At the region meet those times & places were enough for a solid 20 point victory over runner-up Palmer. The Kodiak Boys 6th consecutive title ties a school record set by the girls XC team from 1982-1987 when they had a similar run of region titles.

Our Girls finished:

1st Sr. Abby Reed 20:15

6th So. Chloe Ivanoff 20:45

15th Se. Brianna Gibbs 21:39

26th So. Amelia Egle 22:32 PR

36th Jr. Christy Roe 23:18 PR

42nd So. Jenni Fried 24:04

45th So. Annalise Delos Santos 24:14 PR

A solid third place for the Lady Bears is particularly impressive when you consider we only have two girls back from last year's varsity. The other five girls all came from our own JV program and they have all improve a great deal to get the team to where it is! Amelia Egle, Christy Roe & Annalise all ran PR's and the Other 4 girls were very close to theirs. On this difficult course I would have to say that they had a great day!

The Girls' program has far exceeded the boys' for individual region champs as Abby Reed '05 & '07 joins, Michelle Parker '95 & '97, Kristin Donaldson '92, Denise McMurray '90, Kristi Klinnert '83 '84 '85 & '86, Kathy Kozak '81 & '82 and Kathy Blair '80 to combined for 13 Individual Lady Bear Region Titles in the past 28 years.

JV Girls:

20th Sr. Michelle Canete 24:50 PR

37th Jr. Tina Canete 26:38

43rd Jr. Gloria Roe 26:38

59th Fr. Kristina Emmerson 30:13

JV Girls' team was incomplete for team scores. We need more girls next year!

Bears vs Knights Dual

On Saturday morning the Bears Split wins with the Colony Knights at Ft. Abercormbie
In the last home meet for Seniors; Abby Reed, Brianna Gibbs, Michelle Canete, Benny Garcia, Colton Cubbedge, Caleb Hienrichs, Luke Engvall & Marlon Branson.
Abby Reed topped the day's highlights becoming only the second girl in Kodiak History to run the Ft. Abercrombie course in less than 20 minutes. Abby stopped the clock at 19:53 to join 4 x state champ Kristi Klinnert, a 1987 Kodiak High Graduate, in the girls sub 20 minute club. Klinnert holds the course record at an amazing time of 18:43. Abby became one of just six girls ever from all schools to break the 20 minute mark at Ft. Abercrombie. Abby wasn't the only girl busting PR's on the course. Sophomore Chloe Ivanoff ran her best Ft. Abercrombie time of 20:47 making her the #1 Kodiak sophomore girl on the all-time sophomore grade list for this course. (See attached Ft. Abercrombie list)

Chrsity Roe 23:36 and Annalise Delos Santos 24:51 also ran Personal Record times but the Colony Girls narrowly edged the Kodiak girls by two points, The same number the Bears beat Colony by last week in Palmer. Complete Results are attached

It was a 20-38 win for the boys as senior Colton Cubbedge dropped his best Ft A time by 42 seconds running 17:39 while Senior Benny Garcia returned to the #3 Bear position with a fine 17:25. Another PR for Sophomore Dylan Anthony as he keeps getting faster every week this time running 17:44. Senior Caleb Hienrichs ran a season best 18:14 & Junior Justin Blott PR'ed in18:23 to grab the final varsity spot. Up front the Bears continued to be led by the Junior tandom of Trevor Dunbar & Sam Salus, 16:29 & 16:58 and they will lead the Bears to try and captured their sixth straight Region Crown next week on Colony's home course.

MudFest in Palmer:

Hey there Bear Fans,
The XC Team did it up big, but the media focus of the meet was the atrocious conditions. In a meet that saw the Undefeated, top female runner in the state, lose her shoe and slipped her way back to 13th place, while other 'back of the pack' runners turned their races into a slip & slide mud party, it seemed to be almost forgotten that three of the top female teams in the entire northwest were going head to head for the first time this season. The West Anchorage Eagles, Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears, and three time defending state champ West Valley Wolf Pack had a great mud battle with the Eagles coming out on top, then Juneau & West Valley, 68-74-84 were the scores.
Kodiak Girls
The Lady Bears attacked the mud with enthusiasm and finish 8th out of the 20 schools, 2nd among Region III 4A schools. Led by Senior Captain Abby Reed, 7th in 20:23, who ran a much more even pace than a week ago, and steadily moved up through the dense field passing nearly 30 girls over the last two miles to arrive at her final place:
7th Abby Reed 20:23
19th Chloe Ivanoff 21:03
48th Brianna Gibbs 21:50
63rd Amelia Egle 22:34
95th Christy Roe 24:09
104th Annalise D.S. 24:35
107th Jenni Fried 24:38
Here how the match-up looks on paper:

Kodiak Boys

Lots of rain and lots and lots of mud, just added up to lots & lots & lots of fun for the Bears. Long spikes and big hearts made the difference as the defending state champ boys team put 5 runners in the top 25 of 138 runners in the boys varsity 4A race. That team combination, led by Trevor Dunbar's 48 second individual victory, was enough to give the Bears a 52 point advantage over the second place Colony Knights. In all 19 4A schools fell to the strong Kodiak Bears, but the rematch with the powerful Grizzlies of Grace Christian never happened. Palmer separates the 1A, 2A & 3A schools into a "Small School" Division, which Grace won with their great team depth. Nevertheless, running on the same course, on the same day, does give us a chance to compare times and score a "fantasy" dual meet between the two programs that will count towards our Raven Cup Dual meet series.
The Fantasy dual meet looks as follows:
1. Trevor Dunbar Kodiak 16:18
2. Sam Salus Kodiak 17:42
3. Leif Karlberg Grace 17:45
4. Dylan Anthony Kodiak 17:52
5. Andrew Arnold Grace 17:58
6. Colton Cubbedge Kodiak 18:05
7. Ryan Cox Grace 18:09
8. Drew Edwards Grace 18:10
9. Jake Kirk Grace 18:15
10. Benny Garcia Kodiak 18:16
11. Caleb Cotter Grace 18:30
12. Peter Walls Grace 18:34
13. Caleb Heinsrichs Kodiak 18:42
14. Patrick Schneider Kodiak 19:10

Team Scores
Kodiak 1+2+4+6+10 = 23
Grace 3+5+7+8+9 = 32
Kodiak Bears win by 9 due in large part to the breakthrough performance by Sophomore Dylan Anthony. Dylan ran a lifetime PR of 17:52 under conditions that for most runners, yield times much slower than their norm. Not for Dylan, not only did he PR, he also was the top Sophomore in the entire state. At Skyview he was the Kodiak's 5th runner and was beat by all 7 of the Grace team, Yesterday he was Kodiak's 3rd runner and more importantly beat by only 1 Grace runner. Grace still is showing superior depth with great grouping, very strong 6th & 7th runners and a fantastic JV team. Perhaps next year we can bring them to "The Rock" for a great dual. As for this season we look forward to hosting the State 4A # 2 ranked Colony Knights Next Saturday at 10:00 am on the Ft. Abercombie 5K course

Labor Day Meet:

Labor Day weekend the Bear runners continued their winning ways, this time at the expense of the visiting ACS Lions. Kodiak won the girls race with a team score of 22-39 then capture the boys race 23-34. A big thanks to ACS for ferrying to the Island with their whole team for the meet. They actually brought enough boys to have a Boys JV race for a first, also won by the Bears 15-48, although Port Lion's Randy Boskofsky did jump in there to take the individual honors as did ACS'S Nychelle Fischetti in the Girls Race. The JV Race did provide a great opportunity to let those JV runners get the chance to run up in the front of the pack and compete for the win. Thanks to ACS for making that possible. They were great guests!

The meet was Highlighted by Trevor Dunbar's new Kodiak High School Record time of 15:42. He became the first ever Kodiak Boy to break 16 minutes on the Ft Abercrombie Course, a feat only once previously achieved by West Anchorage's 2x state champ Miguel Gomez, who ran the course record 15:24 in 1993 and went on to place 13th in the Footlocker National Championship. Sam Salus ran 16:57 to because one of only six Kodiak Runners that have toured the Ft. Abercrombie course in less than 17 minutes.Sophomore Dylan Athony Ran his first sub 18, stopping the clock at 17:57

The Girls team saw the continued strong running of the front three, Abby Reed, Chloe Ivanoff & Brianna Gibbs who all PR'd on the course. But it was the large improvements of the 4th & 5th Runners, Amelia Egle & Christy Roe that are really making the team stronger. The two of them collectively have made 5:55 seconds improvement in the three weeks since the Alumni run on the same course!

The Boys top 5

Trevor Dunbar.....15:42

Sam Salus.........16:57

Benny Garcia......17:21

Dylan Anthony....17:57

Colton Cubbedge..18:21

time total 1:26:18 a 2:39 improvement in three weeks

We went from a top 5 average of 17:47 at the Alumni run to 17:16 against ACS

6th man Patrick Schneider is improving rapidly running 18:32 all the way down from 20:27 three weeks ago and in his season debut, Caleb Heinrichs was the 7th man in 18:34 and has had two weeks of pain free running and is hopefully back in the line-up for good!

The Girls Top 5

Abby Reed.......20:21

Chloe Ivanoff.....20:59

Brianna Gibbs...21:30

Amelia Egle......22:40

Christy Roe.......23:51

Time Total 1:49:21 a 3:33 improvement since the Alumni run when neither Amelia or Christy were even in the top five year old average 22:35...new average 21:52

Jenni Fried was a strong 6th runner just inches behind Roe both clocked at 23:51

In all we had 29 runners that ran at both the Alumni run three weeks ago and at this weekend's ACS dual; all together those 29 runners took 37 minutes and 31seconds off the cumulative total time.

That is an average improvement of 1:18 per runner faster. The biggest time dropper was Freshman Austin Estrada who went from 26:00 to 20:51 an amazing 5:09 improvement in three weeks

Complete results are attached and for a bonus, the Ft. Abercrombie 5K all-time course lists are also available for your viewing enjoyment!

Next up for the Bears, Our Varsity runners will travel to the Palmer Invitational to take on virtually every large school in the state in what could be considered the state preview meet.

Our rapidly improving JV squad will travel to Port Lions for the first ever village-hosted meet.

In all it should be a very exciting weekend for all Bear Runners.

GO BEARS!

Hey Kodiak Sports Fans, It was another very solid weekend for the Bear XC Runners.

The Varsity Boys went into the meet as the two time defending champs. 26 teams were competing including all of our region III foes, and after losing four seniors to graduation last year it would be our first chance to prove that Kodiak is still the team to beat. We expected our biggest challenge to come from some where you would not expect, a 3A school, The Grace Christian Grizzlies.

Grace won the 3A State meet last year and lost no one from their team and had put up very strong numbers at the Bartlett Relay a week earlier.

Kodiak Star Trevor Dunbar made the first statement of the meet crushing his own course record of 16:18 turning in a blazing time of 15:54,

Grace's Top runner came in 4th 17:10 just ahead of Kodiak Junior Sam Salus 5th in 17:12, Senior Benny Garcia placed 14th in 17:36, while Grace's second & third runner were 17th & 18th both in 17:41. Next came both team's 4th runners very close together 17:54 & 17:55, with Grace just ahead of Kodiak's Senior Colton Cubbedge. We had a decent advantage at this point but Grace showed great depth going 17:59, 18:00, & 18:16 for their 5th, 6th, & 7th guys, 29th place for their final scored runner. Sophomore Dylan Anthony, On his first time ever running this course and his first time ever running Varsity in a big meet, Posted a huge 31 second PR finishing in 18:27 and 55th place. Dylan's step-up performance allowed us to place head and shoulders above all the other teams except for the powerful Grace squad. Grace would end up beating us by 7 points, 92-99 the final with West Anchorage third with 140.

Further breakdown of the results shows how close our teams really are; in a dual meet scored between Grace & us we would beat them by 1 point 28-29. If you added the times of our top 5 runners we would be Faster at 1:27:06 to Grace at 1:28:27 a 17:25 average vs 17:41 average for Grace. But if you add our top 7 Grace takes the edge, 2:04:44 to 2:05:18 or averages of 17:49 to Kodiak's 17:54, Needless to say Trevor's 15:54 helps us more on the time totals then the place scores because there was a huge 37 seconds there where there were no other runners..

Kodiak Boys' breakdown compared to their previous times:

1st Trevor Dunbar 15:54 29 second faster than last year at this invite, Trevor now owns the fastest three times ever run on this course, 16:23, 16:18 & 15:54
