News from Coach Costello:
KHS Takes Third At NLC Tourney
Kodiak High School took third in the Northern Lights Conference regional wrestling tournament Saturday, December 8th at Colony High School. The Bears finished with 216.5 points, one point shy of second-place Wasilla. Colony, as many predicted, won the region crown with 434 points. To find out about the tournament and information about the thirteen wrestlers headed to the State Tournament, check out the story on KMXT.
(11-14-2007) Michelle Canete became Kodiak’s first girl to win an Alaskan High School wrestling tournament, dominating her opponent under the spotlight Saturday. Michelle was selected the 2007 Robin Hervey tournament outstanding wrestler. We believe she is the first HS girl in Alaska to win the outstanding wrestling award, and is definitely the first for Kodiak. Kodiak finished 2nd in the 7 team event, behind the 4th ranked North Pole team. Champions for Kodiak included Michelle, Jimmy Eggemeyer, Tuck VanMatre, Noah Fields, Marlon Branson, Gary Anthony, second place finishers were David Castonguay, Nick VanMatre, Charles Martin, Jr, and Michael Odell. We were without 3 varsity wrestlers Dylan Anthony, Chloe Ivanoff and Colton Cubbedge who were in Idaho for the Cross Country trip the weekend’s outcome may have been different. Kodiak wrestled on the largest wrestling mats in the US this weekend, with the super size final mat a whopping 40 feet (compare to the minimum 28 and standard 32 foot.) Kodiak’s wrestling team financially assisted (almost $4500) the teams' travel costs to make this event happen. We’re always looking for sponsors and donations to help us with travel expense for home and away competition.
This coming weekend we will be splitting into two squads traveling to West Anchorage and West Valley for tournaments.
(10-29, 2007) The wrestlers had a great weekend at the Lancer Smith (an Alaskan Wrestling Legend) Wrestling Tournament in Palmer. The Bears finished third behind the number 2 and 3 rated teams in Alaska in the 11 team event, featured up to 25 wrestlers in a weight class. Jimmy Eggemeyer remained undefeated finishing first at 130. Placing second in the tournament were Marlon Branson, Jimmy Caswell and Micheal Odell. Third place finishers were Dylan Anthony, Chloe Ivanoff after losing an outstanding match Friday night. Placing 4th were Colten Cubbedge, Nick VanMatre, Noah Fields, Gary Anthony and Charles Martin while Tuck VanMatre finished 5th.
This weekend we travel again to the valley for the North South Tournaments while the following weekend we have the Robin Hervey here in Kodiak
(10-22-2007) Wrestling season is underway, fast and furious. We have almost 50 HS students trying out for wrestling. Our first weekend of competition was at Nikiski. We had a total of 9 dual meets on the weekend. Kodiak finished second in the 20 school event winning 8 duals over teams from all over Alaska (Juneau, Sitka, Skyview) before losing the final meet to Colony, the defending state champions. Marlon Branson was voted the outstanding wrestler of the weekend claiming a state champion among his victims. State champion Jimmy Eggemeyer was undefeated winning all his matches by fall, 2007 girls state champion Chloe Ivanoff was also undefeated (9-0) while State Girls Champion Michelle Canete was 8 3 over the weekend losing to two state finalists. Colten Cubbedge upset a state champion during the action on Saturday. Overall the Bears wrestled very well. They will compete at the Palmer Invitational tournament this weekend, with our home event coming up in November.
