Bears Volleyball Places 4th at Regions

The Bears volleyball team fell short of bid to the state tournament after a 3rd place match loss to Wasilla on Saturday afternoon at the Northern Lights Conference tournament. While upset with the loss, the team found solace in the barriers it broke, namely the win in the first round against Homer and the advancement to the 3rd place game after coming from behind in the match against SoHi.

Middle Hitter Alysa Horn was voted to the All Region First Team; Outside Hitter Linzee Burcham was voted to the All Region Second Team. Outside Hitter Jessie Keplinger received the All Region Good Sport Award.

Bears Tournament Highlights:

Thursday – Kodiak beats Homer – Game Scores: 27-25; 22-25; 25-22; 20-25; 15-12

Bear Netters Break Into Second Round

The Kodiak Bears volleyball team broke their first round curse by beating 2nd seed from the south, Homer in an exciting 5 game match, Thursday afternoon. The Bears, coming off of split weekend with the Mariners team, battled their way to a 27-25, 22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12 victory in the opening round of the Northern Lights Conference tournament being held in Palmer, AK this weekend. While inconsistent at times, the team continued to dig their way through the matches with the support of large contingent of Kodiak fans made up of family members and part of the Kodiak Wrestling team in attendance. While not their best play, it was good enough to advance them into the second round of the playoffs against northern conference opponents, Colony, in the 5:00pm semi-final match on Friday. Colony has beaten Kodiak twice this year, however, regions brings a new opportunity for anything to happen.

Alyssa Horn was selected player of the Kodiak - Homer match by the Palmer tournament staff.

Stats for the game:

Kills: A. Horn - 11, ME. Sebago - 8, I. Burch - 6

Digs: A. Horn - 25; I. Erlanger - 24, I. Garner - 20

Assists: I. Horn - 17; OR. Norton - 11

Blocks (combined solo and assisted) - A. Horn - 9; ME. Sebago - 3

Service Aces: BE. Jones & I. Garner: 3; NO. Peacock & I. Horn - 2

Coaches Comments: Not the prettiest game we've played, but it was a gusty performance because we started 4 points down in game 5. Some great directional service from Rachel Norton was able to slow the Homer attack down enough for us to regain our footing. We squandered a couple of leads in games 2 and 4, games which we ended up loosing, but in the end we scored points when it counted.

Friday - Kodiak loss to Colony

The Bears volleyball team dropped into the consolation bracket of the Northern Lights Conference Tournament following a 4 game loss to the Colony Knights. Game scores: 16-25, 20-25, 27-25, 17-25. The Bears team battled hard and challenged the Knights in most elements of their game, making some fantastic defensive plays, eventually taking a game from their northern opponents, but in the end the Knights overpowered the Bears squad. COACH COMMENTS: Great battle for the Bears team. I received many comments from Colony fans after the match about the scrappy play of the squad, and how well they hustled after every ball. The team really wanted to prove themselves against the top ranked squad and they rattled the Knights several times throughout the match into making errors they don't normally make.

Stats:

Kills: A. Horn – 11; J. Keplinger – 10; M. Sabado – 8

Assists: E. Horn – 21; R. Norton – 13

Blocks: A. Horn – 4

Service Aces: E. Garner – 2

Digs: A. Horn – 26; E. Garner – 26; E. Horn – 19; J. Keplinger – 19

Kodiak Player of the Game: Jessie Keplinger

Saturday – 8:30am Kodiak Win Against Soldotna

After falling behind 2 games in the match, the Bears team played inspired volleyball, coming from behind and taking the next 3 games to take the emotional win and advance to the 3rd place game. The Kodiak squad had a 6:00 a.m. wake up call in order to prepare for the 8:30 a.m. match against SoHi. Game scores: 19-25; 23-25; 25-22; 25-19; 16-14. COACH COMMENTS: Simply the best come back I've seen Kodiak volleyball pull off in my years of coaching. The team kept digging and digging, coming from behind several times and never gave up. I could not have been more proud of the squad.

Stats:

Kills: L. Burcham – 14; M. Sabado – 10; E. Garner – 8

Assists: R. Norton – 21; E. Horn – 19

Service Aces: E. Horn – 6

Digs: A. Horn – 32; E. Garner – 28; M. Sabado – 26

Kodiak Player of the Game: Erika Horn

Saturday: 3:00 p.m. – Kodiak loss to Wasilla

The Kodiak squad's quest for a bid to the state tournament ended following a 3 game loss to Wasilla. Game scores: 17-25; 16-25; 17-25. COACH COMMENTS: In the end, the 2 previous, hard fought games against Colony and SoHi seemed to sap the strength from the squad for their match against Wasilla. As desperately as they wanted the birth to state, they couldn't muster the attack needed to breech the tall front row of the much-improved Warriors squad. The Warriors moved the ball around, using all of their attackers, penetrating the Bears defense. We simply couldn't get our defense to adjust adequately to their attack.

Stats:

Kills: M. Sabado – 7; A. Horn – 4

Assists: R. Norton – 10

Blocks: A. Horn & A. Jones – 1

Service Aces: N. Leacock – 2

Digs: A. Horn – 15; R. Norton - 14

Kodiak Player of the Game: Maureen Sabado

Weekend Nets Mixed Results, October 18-20

We dropped 2 matches to Colony over the weekend, although we did manage to take a couple of games from them. The girls played better on Saturday, than on Friday night, after we had a chance to walk through defensive changes that needed to be made. Colony's middle hitter Hannah Curtis received the majority of the sets and was swift in putting the ball away. We tried just about everything in our arsenal defensively to stop her, but it wasn't until late in Saturday's match that we may have hit on a combination.

Scores and stats:

Friday 18-25; 16-25;-22; 7 - 25

Kodiak Bears' Volleyball defeats Grace Christian Friday

The Bears varsity volleyball team started the extended weekend in grand fashion by defeating the Grace Christian Grizzles in 4 games 25-19, 13-25, 25-20, and 25-23. The match against the Grizzlies was a non-conference match. The Bears started strong in game one taking the lead early behind strong serving and tough defense, keeping the strong Grace attack in check. Bear attackers L. Burcham, A. Horn, and M. Sabado provided 10 kills. In game two, the Grizzlies offense swung into gear and behind their own strong serving, Grace evened the match at one game apiece. However in game three the Bear defense re-adjusted to the attack of the Grizzlies and dug the ball 30 times, led by J. Keplinger, while the Bears offense added another 10 kills. In game four, the Bears once again took an early led, but the Grizzles fought back twice, pushing the Bears until the very end. With the score 24-18, the Bears struggled to find the final combination, and the Grizzlies crept close 24-23. But in the end, a ball handling violation committed by the Grizzlies gave the game and match to the Bears.

Stats for the match:

Kills: A. Horn – 13; L. Burcham – 10

Assists: R. Norton – 22; E. Horn – 7

Digs: A. Horn – 25; R. Norton – 16; J. Keplinger – 14

The Bears “C” team and JV squads we also successful against Grace Christian; The “C” team won their match in 2 games 25-20, 25-19. The JV won their match in 3 games 25-21, 16-25, and 15-4. The Bears press forward with their last regular season road trip with matches tomorrow and Saturday with northern division opponent, Colony. Both games against the north opponent will count in the region standings.

Coach's comment(s):

Great job overall by all three squads. All three groups played consistently and continue to show improvement.

The Varsity squad focused on starting strong for the Grace match was successful in reaching that goal. They struck the ball very well, made good adjustments on defense, and used their serve in attempts to control the Grizzly offense. Except for a slight lull in game 2, they played very consistently.

The advantage of 13 service aces within the match however was not enough as the Bears fell to Grace 26-24, 19-25, 10-15 ending their tournament.

Given the early exit from the tournament, the Bears coaching staff was able implement multiple line-ups in the 21 games played, using all those who traveled with the team.
