Track & Field News & Notes 2008

by Coach Marcus Dunbar

A Great Barrier Breaking Weekend of Track & Field on the Rock!

5-10-08

Trevor Dunbar broke the 2 minute barrier in the 800m for the first time in a big way running 1:56.26 to hold off Palmers Kevin Smith, 1:56.72 and crush Aaron Dickson’s 5 year old meet record of 1:58.24.  Dunbar & Smith are the only two runners in the state to go under 2 minutes so far this season.  Trevor also won the 1600m in 4:21.76 during the heavy rain, wind & cold on Friday.  Then finished off the meet on Saturday with a come-from-behind win over Palmer standout Jake Parisien in a great 3200m race, 9:12.88 to 9:17.72.  For his great runs Trevor was voted the Athlete of the Meet.

Linzee Burcham Cleared 5 feet in the high jump for her first time over that barrier which ties her as a state leader and she won the 100m(13.4), 200m(28.07) & anchored the winning 4x400m relay team(4:24.84 #5 best state time with a 64.9 closing leg).  Linzee was voted the Female Athlete of the Meet!

Michael Odell Broke the 50 foot barrier in the shot put for the first time this season throwing 50’ 2” to break his own meet record and rank him 3rd in the state in the event.  He also won the 100m(11.3), 200m(23.60) and his new event the 300m Hurdles(42.24) Michael leads the region in all three of the events and is first ranked in the state in the hurdles.

Chloe Ivanoff Broke the 2:30 barrier in the 800m run, winning the event and setting a personal record time of 2:29.57.

Angelo Medina & Darlene Aitolu broke 120’ Discus & 30’ shot barriers respectively

Finally, half way through the meet on Saturday, the rain stopped falling for a little while.  That was nice!

Kodiak Girls and Boys won the team competitions:

But the visiting teams provided some highlights of their own:

Juneau ’s Leah Francis set meet records in the 1600m 5:16.10 and the 3200m 11:07.93

While Teammate Kristie Ely Long jumped to a new meet record of 16’ 00.75”.  The former records in the events were held by Kodiak athletes, Abby Reed & Jasmine Oliver

Palmer came to the Island with a powerful boys' team and gave us a great battle. The Moose won three of the four relays and went away with two new school records.  Kevin Smith’s 1:56.72 800m and Jake Parisien’s 9:17.72.  Both records set on the same day in Kodiak Alaska with 72 hundredths of a second on the end and both second place finishes to the same Kodiak runner, Trevor Dunbar.  How is that for coincidences?

Complete Meet results are attached and can be found at Athletic.net

A Big Big Thanks to Brian & Kelly Young and the Young Fisheries for sponsoring this meet and making it so much more memorable for the athletes

Next weekend the Bears will travel to Palmer for the Region III 4A Championship Meet where the boys will try to defend their 2007 title and the girls will shoot for their first title since the late 1980’s.

GO BEARS!

Bears' Fans:

We pulled off one great day of Track & Field last weekend, May 3rd, before the Snow Storm shut us down.  We are planning to get in the rest of the events on Monday & Tuesday this week in what we are calling "The Kodiak Classic."

Friday's Highlights included:

A huge PR by Sophomore Chaven Davidson to win the Boys 1600m 4:47.68.  No fewer than 6 Kodiak boys, (Davidson, Benny Garcia, Colton Cubbedge, Jimmy Eggemeyer, Dylan Anthony & Justin Blott) finished between 4:47 & 4:55 While our top two milers, Trevor Dunbar & Sam Salus were gone to Anchorage for the Heart Run 5K which unfortunately got cancelled.

Linzee Burcham won 4 events, 100m 13.70, 400m 65.76, High Jump 4' 10" and anchored the winning 4x200 relay 1:55.12,  while Abby Reed ran a season best 5:33.91 in the girls' 1600m leading teamates Chloe Ivanoff, Jaymi Bethea & Brianna Gibbs all under 6:00

Michael Odell won three events, 100m 11.73, Shot Put 49' 03, 4x200 relay 1:38.61 with teammates Andy Dittman, Christian Zarate & Gage Cubbedge. Erwin Domingo took advantage of his first opportunity to long jump this season and popped off a Region III leading personal record of 19' 10".

We will keep you posted on results.

----------------

A Big Thanks to our friends at Puglia Engineering Inc. for their generous support of this event.

Michael Odell made it a clean sweep of 4 straight years of winning the event and he most certainly saved his best for last.  His whopping total of 3334 broke his own school record by over 300 points.  After Sophomore Karsten Schick took the early led in the high jump, we went to the 100m and it became all Odell from there on in.  He never looked back.  After a PR 5’ 06” in the high jump, Odell put up the team’s best performances in the next three events; 100m 11.71, Shot Put 44’ 11, 300m Hurdles 43.18.  By the time he reached the start of the 800m, his thoughts were all on how much he could break his record by.  Needing only a 2:48 to break the record and knowing he had run 2:31 the year before, he had a comfortable 17 second cushion on the record and a 42 second gap on second place contender, Schick, who was down by over 500 points.  Odell set out on a conservative 1:15 first lap and brought his victory lap home in 1:09 for total time of 2:24.6.  That brought his total to the final 3334 that should grace our record board for many years to come.  Schick had to dig deep with a 2:11.3 800m to hold of the fast closing Cody Foster who moved past Andy Dittman to take third also recording a 2:11.3 in the 800m

Alysa Horn, Our 2005 Pentathlon champ from her freshman year, Came back has a senior, like Odell, better than ever!  But unlike Odell, she was pushed hard all the way to the finish of the event by another Senior, Brianna Gibbs.  Gibbs took the initial led by 100 points after the high jump, 4’ 08” to 4’04”.  Horn came back in the 100m 14.19 to 15.24 for Gibbs, to grab the led by 25 points.  Then in the shot put Horn was able to stretch her led another 70 points, out throwing Gibbs by 3’ 9” 26’ 02” to 22’ 05.  The 300m hurdles also went to Horn gaining another 40 points by running 52.56 to 54.26 for Gibbs.  Starting the 800m Horn would have a 135 point led and would start 14 seconds in front of Gibbs.  The first one across the line wins it all.  Both went out fast coming through the first lap in 75 seconds.  Then with 300m to go, it was apparent that Horn was starting to feel the pace and was slowing down.  Gibbs was catching up slowly with about 30 meters between them.  On the final turn, Horn slowed down some more and the gap was shrinking faster than ever, only 10 meters between them now.  Coming off the turn to the final straight, Gibbs had closed to within 5 meters and appeared poised to go by for the win, but Horn would have no part of that. She woke up out of her agony and summoned up a final kick that Gibbs, at that point, had no answer for.  Alysa Horn’s 2:48.4 was enough to give her a new school record of 2921 while Brianna Gibbs had closed with a 2:37.8 making up 11 of the 14 seconds she needed for the win, totaling 2896 points, 200 points superior to Syrena Poulos’s old record of 2696.  What a great start to Prom Night for both young ladies!  Congratulations to all.

Go Bears!

Hey There Bear Fans,

After breaking the ice, literally, with the Blue Gold Meet.  It was a much welcome change to run our first Big Meet, the "Big "C" Relays", In Anchorage's new Sports Dome.  Alaska Track & Field has never had it so good before and the performances showed the difference of what's possible in early April when given a break from the weather.

Kodiak Junior Star, Trevor Dunbar lead the way for the Bears with three big wins and 4 PR performances.  First he ran a PR 1:59.3 anchor leg on the 4 x 800m relay that brought his team of Benny Garcia, Dylan Anthony, Colton Cubbedge up to 2nd place finish, then won the 1600m in PR time or 4:17.92, next won a very exciting, "come from behind" run to capture a very closs 800m 2:00.15 to Grace Christian's Drew Edwards 2:00.19.  Saving his best event for last, he surpassed everyone's expectation by taking 10 seconds off his own school record in the 3200m stopping the clock in 9:11.90.  Good stuff, but that was far from all the Bears did to impress the crowd of 25 south central Alaskan teams.

Andy Dittman & Michael Odell Lead our Sprinters taking 2nd & 4th in the 100m final and teaming up on two 3rd place relay finishes, Dittman also ran on a sprint Medley team while Odell pick up another 4th place individual finish in the Shot Put. 47' 1.25".  Odell's 11.42 first round performance in the 100m was a PR.

Lynsi Daoust, Sam Oliver, Natalie Block, & Linzee Burcham teamed up to Match the Boys 4x8 team with a 2nd place finish, the highest for all the Bear relays.  Their time of 53.91 currently ranks as the third fastest in the state. Natalie also ran two great 400m legs on relays (66 & 65) and was picked by coaches as the Subway Athlete of the Meet along with Trevor

Abby Reed was the top girl point winner for the Bears with 16 points comming from her second place finishes in the 1600 & 3200

Other Personal Record Perfoirmances(PR's) came from:

All the new Hurdlers PR'ed;

Micheal Gilbert 18:54 110H, & 45.36 300H

Sam Oliver 20.15 100H

Keeley Wall 20.83 100H, 57.63 300H

Aslyn Parker 22.02 100H, 57.22 300H

Angelo Medina hit a big Discus Throw of 120' 06"

Trevor's 10 second PR in the 3200m was small potatoes compared to:

Dylan Anthony 10:17.30, a 45 second PR &

Colton Cubbedge 10:30.76 a PR by a whopping 1:23

Jaymi Bethea 12:51.30 took 1:24 off her old best

Though they did not Team score the meet, I took the liberty of scoring out all the events10-8-6-4-2-1 just as they do at the state meet.  Certainly had they been team scoring coaches may have played their hands differently but never the less, here's what it looked like:

Boys:

1. Kodiak 68, 2.Bartlett 62, 3.Dimond 48, 4. Palmer 45, 5.Service 33, 6.East 31, 7.Grace 28, 8.Seward 26, 9.South 25, 10.Colony 24

Girls:

1.Dimond 87, 2.West 56, 3.ACS 44 4.Kodiak 33, 5.Soldotna 30, 6.Bartlett 29, 7.East 26, 8.Eagle River 24 9.CIA 23 10. Colony 23

Girls & Boys scores combined we picked up 101 points second only to Dimond's 135, Bartlett would come thrid with 91
