Kodiak High School Physical Education Course Offerings
Aerobic Fitness and Exercise . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Grades 9-12, one semester or one year; prerequisite: none; repeatable.
Basic principles of aerobic conditioning will be taught and practiced. The use of music will be a motivating element with "Step", floor and water aerobics. Power walking and jogging will add variety and fresh air when weather permits. Stretching and free-weight exercises as well as relaxation techniques will be included.
Dance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Grades 9-12, one semester or one year; prerequisite: none; repeatable.
Jazz and Modern Dance forms will be presented along with Ballet and Social Dance basics. Emphasis on jazz techniques, style and dance combinations will be taught each semester. Introduction to and practice of choreographic material will occur regularly. Students will have an opportunity to perform in an annual concert. The use of jazz, r & b, and pop music will lend to the exciting forms of dance along with classical and alternative rhythms.
Advanced Dance. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Grades 10-12, one semester or one year; prerequisite: one year of Dance and instructor approval; repeatable.
This course will focus on the serious dancer who wants more advanced instruction and skill development in the ever expanding field of dance. Technique, student solo or group choreography and performance will be focused.
Lifetime Fitness . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Grades 9-12, one semester or one year; prerequisite: none; repeatable.
Cross-training lifetime activities will be presented two or three days a week with emphasis on fitness. Introduction to and practice of individual/group activities such as running, water games, climbing, golf, football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, softball and cooperative games will follow seasonal demands. Basic principles of weight lifting will be presented along with safety, proper technique, and skill building. Rigorous disciplined lifting will be practiced two or three days a week.
Lifetime/Outdoor Pursuits . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Grades 9-12, one semester or one year; prerequisite: instructor approval; fee of $25 per semester.
Participation will focus on lifetime recreational activities such as bicycling, hiking, climbing, golf, bowling, and additional options as available. This class is for the student who wants the optimum skill development in specific lifetime recreational pursuits.
Weightlifting . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Grades 9-12, one semester or one year; prerequisite: none; repeatable.
This course will focus on physical fitness through weight training and conditioning. The primary focus will be strength gain through lifting in a serious disciplined program, coupled with strenuous cardiovascular conditioning.
