Melissa Dover

Ms Dover earned a bachelor's degree in English from Boston University in 1998 and a teaching certificate from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks in 2002. She enjoys hiking, running, writing, and playing with her son Fisher.

Melissa is teaching the following courses during the 2007-2008 school year.

Composition and Literature
10th grade; Offered as a semester or year-long course
Prerequisites: English Explorations or recommendation of previous English instructor.

Composition skills are developed through poetry, the expository essay, the formal essay, and the research paper. Understanding and analyzing literature is explored through discussion and writing. Grammar and vocabulary lessons occur weekly.

Film as/and Literature
Grade Level(s): 11-12; Year-long course
Prerequisite(s): Teacher recommendation required.

This course explores what makes good literature and good film, and the relationship between the two genres. The focus is on how literary and cinematic expression differ, and how-or-if the former translates into the latter. Students will learn to read novels, plays, and short stories critically and to watch films critically.

Cadet Teaching
Grade Level(s): 11-12; Semester or year-long course
Prerequisite(s): Application; satisfactory grades and attendance

This course is an opportunity for students who may be interested in a career in education to get hands-on experience in a classroom. Under the guidance of the classroom teacher, cadets will provide individual, small group, or whole group instruction, participate as an assistant in activities such as music, P.E., recess or lunchroom duty, and help with other classroom duties. Basic planning and teaching skills will be taught. Enrollment in this course requires monthly group meetings with the instructor, one "shadow day" each semester where the student spends the entire school day with his/her mentor teacher and other activities which occur outside of regular class time. Each semester the cadet teacher will present one "formal" lesson plan listing goals and objectives with evaluative comments from the mentor teacher.

Co-Op Work Assignment Grade Level(s): 11-12; Semester or year-long course
Prerequisite(s): Three career technology classes; application required. This course is repeatable for additional credit,but requires teacher approval.

This course provides students with a work experience situation which will provide training in the world of work. Students will be responsible for weekly reports and problem solving situations. Students will be exposed to the most critical areas of employment; i.e. attendance, communication, dependability, initiative, conflict resolution, and responsibility
