In 2005 East Students, Parents, and Staff created the East Student Garden at the entrance to our parking lot. It is visible from Benny Benson. Funds were raised through a “Buy a Brick” Fundraiser in which $3.00 donations were made for each brick or other gardening supplies. A grant was also obtained from the Kodiak Garden Club and generous discounts were given by local businesses Sutliff’s True Value, Spenard Builder’s Supply, and Strawberry Fields Nursery. Every East Student was given the opportunity to start seeds indoors including, Daisies, Forget-Me-Nots, Lupine, Chives, Snow-In-Summer, and Columbine. Other various plants were donated and planted by parents and staff. Since its creation, students have planted Daffodil Bulbs and the 5th grade students have helped maintain the garden and plant various seeds in the spring before they graduate from East. Parents and staff volunteer to maintain the garden over summer vacations. East PTA provides funding for maintenance supplies.
East Elementary is located between Rezanof Drive and Mill Bay Road on Benny Benson across from Kodiak College.
