Battle of the Books

Under construction!

The Battle of the Books is a statewide reading incentive program, sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. Each year, twelve to fifteen titles are selected by school librarians for students to read. Some students begin reading during the summer, and when school resumes meetings are scheduled and the books are discussed. Students often meet weekly to discuss their reading, then answer questions in an oral, comprehensive format.

The state program organizes students into grade-level teams, such as third-fourth grades; fifth-sixth grades; seventh-eighth grades; and high school levels. Kindergarten-second graders are involved, but only compete at a local level.

The district battles were held the week of January 29-February 1st, as listed below. Check out photos of the teams and competitors on the Battle page. They took place via video conference. Recently, the Kodiak High School & Middle School teams traveled by ferry to Port Lions to battle with them. Click here to view the story & photos from that trip.

Reading lists for 2008-09 are now posted at the State Battle of the Books site. For more information about this motivational program, Battle of the Books' Website.

If you would like more information about the Kodiak program, contact district coordinator, high school librarian, Laurie Madsen.
