| Welcome to the Kodiak Island Borough School District (KIBSD) where all our communities play an essential role in education and all our successes are measured one child at a time. Kodiak Island Schools serve students in educational projects from preschool to introductory career and work for young adults. We value both academics and activities as essential to education. We work closely with community organizations to form strong partnerships focused on the development of our best natural resource - our children. KIBSD is not just a place or an organization. It is an attitude. The Board of Education Philosophy in part states, “… Our emphasis is placed on excellence which seeks to instill a desire to keep learning, to be self-motivated and self-disciplined and to believe in one’s self-worth”. Education is much more than developed skills in reading, writing and mathematics. It is the inspirational act of creating a positive personal vision and mission for each student. This is a task greater than the sum of every KIBSD employee and School Board member. This kind of excellence is born in the total sum of the people of every residence, business, and organization in the Kodiak Island Archipelago. It is found in our many diverse communities’ shared vision. This vision is for our students’ future. Together we can instill a desire to keep learning, to be self-motivated and self-disciplined. More than a vision, it will be through our shared actions that we instill a desire to lead each of our students to believe in their own self-worth. The KIBSD and our island communities will continue to face challenges during this school year. Federal and State mandates combined with increased operational costs create a nearly insurmountable opposition to the task of meeting our District Mission. Yet somehow we will meet each challenge with innovation and resolve. It is what our communities do. Teachers, building and Central Services administrators, and I are always willing and pleased to talk with you to discuss concerns, hear praise, answer questions, or share thoughts that you may have regarding your child’s educational program. Parent perspectives and ideas are greatly appreciated and have helped improve our schools. Please feel free to communicate by e-mail with teachers. My e-mail is smcdonald01@kodiakschools.org. If you have any questions, please call the Central Services at 481-6200 or contact your child’s principal. I am proud to work with so many dedicated staff and community members. We have planned, prepared and are ready to deliver the best education we can. I hope that each of your children feels the welcome and attention they need to find their purpose, place, meaning and vision as a KIBSD student. Sincerely, Stewart McDonald |
